Western New England Defeats Curry with Strong Defensive Performance, 57-43

Anderson posts double-double and reaches 1000-point milestone

MILTON , Mass. (February 11, 2017) – The Western New England University women's basketball team limited Curry College to 28.1% shooting from the field and outscored the Colonels 24-12 in the second and third quarters, earning a 57-43 victory this afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Katz Gymnasium.

Top Performers
• Senior forward Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.) posted her second consecutive double-double with ten points and ten rebounds to go with three assists. Following her ten-point effort, Anderson now has 1002 for her career, including 974 at Western New England and 28 as a freshman at Suffolk University.
• Senior forward Paige Young (Berlin, Conn.) finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points, nine rebounds and four steals.
• Junior guard Dorothy O'Neill (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded nine points, six assists and two boards.

• Sophomore guard Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) led Curry with a team-high 13 points, four assists and two rebounds.
• Freshman guard Sam Bamford (Easton, Mass.) added nine points, seven boards and three assists.

Game Review
• Seniors Sammie Olson (Tolland, Conn.) and Sammie Battaini (Leominster, Mass.) both connected from beyond the arc early as Western New England jumped out to a 6-0 lead, and the Golden Bears pushed their advantage to eight (12-4) after a layup by Young at the 5:21 mark of the first quarter.
• Curry, which trailed by the same margin (21-13) following Battaini's layup with 1:12 remaining in the period, outscored the Golden Bears 5-1 over the final 51 seconds and trailed 22-18 after ten minutes of play.
• Irwin carried the Colonels in the second quarter, scoring six straight points for her team midway through the frame as Curry managed to stay within five (29-24) with 4:30 on the clock.
• Young completed a traditional three-point play with 2:50 remaining, sparking an 8-0 run to close out the half as Western New England opened up a 37-24 lead at the break.
• The Golden Bears got off to a slow start in the third quarter, as sophomore forward Aliyah Brito's (Brockton, Mass.) layup at the 5:38 mark represented Western New England's points of the period. O'Neill drained a three-pointer 55 seconds later, stretching the visitors' lead to 14 (42-28), and the Golden Bears led by as much as 18 before junior center Nicole Rice's (Woburn, Mass.) late jumper cut Curry's deficit to 16 heading into the fourth quarter.
• The Colonels were unable to get closer than 14 in the low scoring fourth, while Anderson led Western New England with five points, including the 1000^th of her career.

• Western New England shot 37.7% from the field, 36.4% from three-point range, and 60% from the free throw line.
• The Golden Bears held a 43-40 rebounding advantage.
• Western New England limited Curry to just 25 points on 25% shooting (11-of-44) over the final three quarters.
