Golden Bears & Gulls Play to 1-1 Draw in CCC Opener

Serafino nets her first goal of the season in 67th minute

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 15, 2018) – The Western New England University women's soccer team played Endicott College to a 1-1 draw on Saturday morning in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener for both teams at Suprenant Field.

Top Performers
Junior midfielder Kaeli Serafino (Ludlow, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season for the Golden Bears in the second half to tie the contest.

Senior goalkeeper Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.) made a season-high ten saves, including six in the second half and two in the second overtime period.

Endicott's goal came courtesy of senior midfielder Mary Verneris (Hamden, Conn.) in the 65th minute.

Game Review
Neither team was able to find the back of the net during a closely contested opening half in which the Gulls outshot the Golden Bears by a 7-5 margin.

Verneris got Endicott on the board at the 64:25 mark, when she headed home a cross from junior forward Catherine Elkas (Holden, Mass.) that was sent in from the right side.

Just under two minutes later, the Golden Bears equalized when Serafino collected a loose ball right outside the box and fired a shot into the top left corner of the net.

Endicott had several chances to score in the first overtime session, but the Gulls were unable to secure the game-winning goal. Sophomore midfielder Jillian Presser (Trumbull, Conn.) put a long free kick just over the crossbar in the 93rd minute, before sophomore defender Kadrianna Letts (Beverly, Mass.) hit the bar with an attempt at the 94:21 mark.

Veilleux made saves on Endicott's final two shots in the second overtime as the contest ended in a 1-1 draw.

Notes
• Freshman midfielder Autumn Hathaway (Colchester, Vt.) accounted for five of Western New England's 11 shots.
• The Gulls held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
