SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 1, 2018) - The Western New England University women's soccer team dropped Monday evening's non-conference matchup against Western Connecticut State University at Suprenant Field, 1-0.
Top Performers
Sophomore forward Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.) was aggressive for the Golden Bears, tallying a team-high five shots.
Western Connecticut received its lone goal from freshman forward Kaleigh Panek (Shelton, Conn.). Freshman goalkeeper Karly Martin (Bristol, Conn.) made seven saves to earn the shutout.
Game Review
The Colonials were able to take the lead early in the contest courtesy of Panek's goal. At the 6:58 mark, Panek was able to skate past a Golden Bear defender unassisted and find the back of the net to make it 1-0 in favor of Western Connecticut.
The Western New England offense stayed aggressive throughout the half registering nine shots in the period, but the visitors led 1-0 at the break.
The Golden Bears continued to play from behind and look for their opportunity to score in the second half. Western New England had several great chances to tie the score, especially in the final minutes of the second period.
In the 88th minute, Smith came around the right side of the box, but Martin broke up the play.
In desperation, sophomore Bee Murphy (Monson, Mass.) set up a corner kick with under a minute to go and placed it perfectly for a Kristin Decost (Hudson, N.H.) header, but again, Martin made a great save to seal the shutout victory for the Colonials.

• Western New England held the advantage in shots, 18-11.
• Senior Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.) and junior Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) split the goalkeeping duties for the Golden Bears. Both players made one save in 45 minutes of action.
• Western New England had four corner kicks, while the Colonials took two.

Western New England (4-6-1) looks to bounce back Saturday at 11 am against Gordon College. Western Connecticut (5-6) will play at Manhattanville Wednesday at 4 pm.
