Golden Bears Score Three Unanswered Goals to Earn 3-2 Win over Gordon

Bruehwiler scores twice, Skates nets game-winner

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 6, 2018) – The Western New England University women's soccer team scored three unanswered second half goals to earn a 3-2 victory over Gordon College on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Suprenant Field.

Top Performers
Freshman forward Allison Bruehwiler (Old Saybrook, Conn.) played a key role in Western New England's comeback, as she scored a pair of goals early in the second half.

Sophomore defender Danielle Skates (Berlin, Conn.) capped the Golden Bears' rally with her first career goal in the 77th minute.

Junior goalkeeper Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) made five saves, including four in the second half, to earn her first victory of the season.

Gordon was fueled offensively by junior forward Lexi Potter (South Glens Falls, N.Y.), who found the back of the net twice in the first half.

Game Review
Potter staked the Fighting Scots to an early 1-0 lead with her 12th goal of the season in the 14th minute. The junior struck again with just 1:30 remaining before the break to give Gordon a 2-0 advantage at halftime.

Bruehwiler got the Golden Bears on the board less than two minutes into the second half, before burying the equalizer from the penalty spot at the 49:51 mark.

The score remained tied until the 77th minute, when Skates scored the goal that would stand as the game-winner. Junior Julia Sarnelli (Island Park, N.Y.) took a long free kick that Gordon freshman goalkeeper Jenny Deckert (Gloucester, Mass.) was unable to handle. The ball popped loose and Skates tapped in the rebound to put the Golden Bears in front.

The Western New England defense came through with a key play to keep the Golden Bears ahead in the 83rd minute, and Lemekha turned away the Fighting Scots' final attempt in the 86th minute to seal the victory.

Notes
• The Fighting Scots held slight edges in both shots (17-16) and corner kicks (4-3).
• Bruehwiler's two-goal effort is her second this season. The freshman also tallied two goals in Western New England's 2-1 win at Mount Holyoke on September 11.
