Western New England Edges Wentworth in Double OT, 2-1

Golden Bears improve to 4-1-1 in OT games this season

BOSTON, Mass. (October 9, 2018) – Sophomore midfielder Bee Murphy (Monson, Mass.) scored in the 102nd minute to lift the Western New England University women's soccer team to a 2-1, double overtime victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Sweeney Field.

Top Performers
Murphy and sophomore midfielder Kristin Decost (Hudson, N.H.) both scored for the Golden Bears, while sophomore forward Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.) and freshman forward Allison Bruehwiler (Old Saybrook, Conn.) recorded assists.

Junior goalkeeper Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) was strong in net, making six saves to earn her second win of the season.

Wentworth's lone goal came courtesy of senior Madyson Reno (Superior, Colo.) with an assist from sophomore Molly Donahue (Quincy, Mass.).

Game Review
The Leopards had a solid opportunity to open the scoring early on a shot by freshman Ashley Molnar (Northridge, Calif.) in the third minute, but Lemekha made a diving stop to keep the home team off the board.

Wentworth was able to break through before the end of the half, however, as Reno finished far post in the 42nd minute after receiving a through ball from Donahue.

Still trailing by a goal ten minutes into the second half, Western New England equalized at the 56:29 mark when Decost headed home a cross from Bruehwiler.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net over the final 33+ minutes of regulation or during the first ten-minute overtime session, but Murphy secured Western New England's key road win 1:42 into the second OT period. Smith sent a pass to Murphy from midfield, and she took a quick touch before scoring with a shot to the far post.

Notes
• Wentworth outshot Western New England 20-14, but the Golden Bears held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
• Bruehwiler, who was named the CCC Rookie of the Week earlier today, ranks second on the team with ten points.
• Six of Western New England's 13 games this season have gone to overtime. The Golden Bears are 4-1-1 in those contests.
