Smith tallies team-leading fourth goal of the season
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 19, 2018) – The Western New England University women's soccer team overcame a late deficit to force overtime for the second straight game before falling to Elms College, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Suprenant Field.
Top Performers
Western New England sophomore forward Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.) scored the equalizer for the Golden Bears in the 82nd minute and put a team-high five shots on goal.
Junior Jordan Bailey (Monson, Mass.) netted the opener for Elms, while freshman Sydney Goodwin (Lawrence, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal late in the second overtime period.
Game Review
Western New England had an opportunity to pull ahead in the 17th minute, but junior Kaeli Serafino's (Ludlow, Mass.) shot was saved by Elms junior goalkeeper Rebecca Molin (West Hartford, Conn.).
Bailey got the Blazers on the board at the 25:47 mark, when she collected the ball near the top of the box following a failed Western New England clear attempt, and chipped a shot into the right corner of the net.
The Golden Bears outshot the Blazers 10-1 in the second half, but the home team was unable to break through until the 81:32 mark, when Smith beat an Elms defender to a loose ball and snuck a shot past Molin.
The contest appeared to be headed for a draw in the late stages of overtime, but Elms was able to come away with a win as Goodwin received a long pass, dribbled through a pair of defenders, and lofted a shot over the head of Western New England senior goalkeeper Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.).

• Western New England outshot Elms by a 25-4 margin and also held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
• Smith has scored nine goals in 27 career contests. She leads the Golden Bears with four this season.
