Early Surge Sparks Salve Regina to 5-3 Win over Western New England

Smith, Murphy & Chiarella score for Golden Bears

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (September 29, 2018) – Salve Regina senior Abby McMackin (Walpole, Mass.) registered a hat trick and sophomore Jamie Robert (Holyoke, Mass.) added two goals as the Seahawks posted a 5-3 victory over Western New England University on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's soccer action at Gaudet Field.

Top Performers
McMackin and Robert powered the Salve Regina offense, while senior goalkeeper Carly Pala (Milford, Conn.) made seven saves in goal.

Sophomores Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.) and Bee Murphy (Monson, Mass.), and freshman Vanessa Chiarella (Hampden, Mass.) each scored for the Golden Bears. Murphy and freshman Autumn Hathaway (Colchester, Vt.) were credited with assists in the loss.

Game Review
Salve Regina jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than six minutes into the contest as McMackin netted a pair of goals, the second of which came at the penalty spot following a Western New England foul in the box.

Chiarella tallied her first collegiate goal at the 9:42 mark, but the Seahawks restored their two-score lead (3-1) just over two minutes later when McMackin completed her hat trick in the 12th minute.

The home team maintained its 3-1 lead until the Golden Bears drew closer at the 65:57 mark when Murphy found the back of the net with the help of an assist from Hathaway.

Robert struck for a pair of goals in the 75th and 83rd minutes, however, to put the Seahawks ahead 5-2.

Western New England was able to get one goal back as Murphy set up Smith at the 85:15 mark, but the Golden Bears would get no closer.

• Western New England outshot Salve Regina 20-16 and held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
• Smith leads the Golden Bears with six goals this season.
