Volleyball Selected 6th in Preseason Poll

CCC Preseason Poll

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (August 23, 2021) - In the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Volleyball Preseason Poll released earlier today, the Golden Bears were selected sixth in the conference.

Western New England looks to start the fall of 2021 strong after going 2-2 in the spring of 2021 shortened season. The Golden Bears split with both Nichols and Gordon this past spring and are looking to bring more success with the upcoming fall.

In 2019, the Golden Bears were 12-8 overall and 2-6 in the CCC. The team qualified for the CCC tournament quarterfinals as the seventh seed, where they fell to Roger Williams.

Endicott earned the top spot in the preseason poll with eight first-place votes followed by Roger Williams in second with one first-place vote. Salve Regina took third with Wentworth in fourth and Gordon in fifth with one first-place vote. Western New England claimed sixth followed by University of New England (7), Suffolk (8), Nichols (9) and Curry (10).

The Golden Bears are excited to be returning middle blocker, Abigail Bundy (Lebanon, Conn.) who in 2019 recorded 61 kills and 21 blocks as a junior. The team is also returning defensive specialist Taylor Deluga (Dennis, Mass.) who has 500 digs in her career. Deluga tallied 365 digs in 2019 alone as a sophomore. The team will be adding junior transfer, Sarah Scott (Granby, Mass.) to the team along with freshman Taylor Geist (Denver, N.C.), freshman Zoe Bozzay (Escondido, Calif.), and sophomore Olivia Hall (Haverhill, Mass.).

Western New England opens the 2021 season hosting Elms on September 1 before traveling to Norwich, Vermont for the Vermont Volleyball Classic on September 3 and September 4. The Golden Bears return home to host Framingham State (Sep. 9) and a tri-match with Amherst and Emerson on September 11. The team travels to Westfield State on September 15 and will compete in a tri-match at Wheaton College before opening CCC play hosting Gordon on September 21.
