Seahawks Sweep Golden Bears in CCC Match

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 28, 2021) – The Western New England volleyball team hosted Salve Regina in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match up earlier tonight and fell 3-0 to the Seahawks.

Records:

  • Salve Regina: 6-4, 1-1 CCC
  • Western New England: 6-7, 1-2 CCC

How It Happened:

The first set opened with the Seahawks scoring two in a row before the Golden Bears were able to tie the set 2-2 with Olivia Hall at the serve. The back-and-forth action continued up until Western New England scored two consecutive points to get within one (11-10). The Seahawks then rallied for a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the set 18-10. The Golden Bears were unable to recover and dropped the first set 25-16.

The Seahawks kept their momentum from the first set and scored seven straight points to lead 7-0 before the Golden Bears could get on the board. After two points for Western New England, the back-and-forth action began again. With the Golden Bears down 11-6, Sarah Scott took the serve and led her team to four unanswered points to put the Golden Bears back in the set only down 11-10. The Golden Bears later tied the set 12-12 before the Seahawks rallied for six consecutive points to lead 18-12. Western New England fought to get back within three (19-16) only for the Seahawks to take control and score the next six points to win the set 25-16.

The back-and-forth action started right at beginning of the third set. With the Golden Bears trailing 5-4, the Seahawks rallied for a 3-0 run to lead 8-4 and later 10-5. Hall and Scott both recorded kills to put the Golden Bears within three (10-7). Western New England fought to stay close only for the Seahawks to record a 4-0 run to take an 18-11 lead. The Golden Bears were unable to get any true momentum in the remainder of the set and fell to the Seahawks 25-17 in the third set and 3-0 in the match.

Inside the Numbers:

  • The Golden Bears tallied 23 kills, 23 assists and 42 digs in the match along with five service aces and six block assists.
  • Sarah Scott led the team with five kills and 11 digs on the night while Olivia Hall tallied four kills and three digs.
  • Taylor Geist earned 13 assists while Hailey Sell recorded 10. Becca Mayer tallied nine digs in the match.
