Roger Williams Downs Golden Bears 3-0 in CCC Play

BRISTOL, R.I. (October 23, 2021) – The Golden Bears continued Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play today on the road at Roger Williams where the Hawks remained in control and won the match 3-0.

Records:

  • Roger Williams: 8-9, 6-1 CCC
  • Western New England: 10-12, 3-4 CCC

How It Happened:

In the opening set, Roger Williams hit .222 percent with 12 kills while the Golden Bears tallied eight kills with a .036 hitting percentage. The Hawks took an early 9-5 lead and advanced their lead to 20-11 before the Golden Bears were led by Alissa Hawes for three points to get back within six (20-14). Roger Williams regained control and won the first set 25-18.

In the second set, the Golden Bears once again tallied eight kills with a .133 hitting percentage while the Hawks tallied 12 kills again and dropped in hitting percentage to .189. The Golden Bears fought to keep the set tied and eventually with a 5-0 run took an 11-8 lead. Western New England led 15-11 when the Hawks gained momentum and scored five unanswered points to take a 16-15 lead. Another 5-0 run by the Hawks followed by a 4-0 run gave them the 25-16 win in the second set.

The Hawks hit their best percentage in the third set with .312 while earning 15 kills while the Golden Bears also performed their best of the day with 10 kills and a .158 hitting percentage. Roger Williams jumped out to an 8-4 lead while the Golden Bears continued to chip away at the lead. A late 5-0 run by the Hawks extended their lead to nine (20-11) and Western New England was unable to recover falling 25-16 in the final set to drop the match 3-0.

Inside the Numbers:

  • Alissa Hawes led the Golden Bears with nine kills while also earning 14 digs to also lead the team and hitting .227 in the match.
  • Taylor Geist tallied 20 assists for the Golden Bears.
  • As a team, the Golden Bears earned 26 kills, 25 assists and 38 digs in the match while hitting .115 percent.
