Golden Bears Downed by Rams in CCC Action
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 13, 2021) – Women's volleyball hosted Suffolk in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) battle where the Rams came out on top 3-0.
Records:
- Suffolk: 7-11, 1-4 CCC
- Western New England: 9-8. 2-3 CCC
How It Happened:
Suffolk opened the first set strong recording a 5-0 run after the Golden Bears earned the first point of the set. The Golden Bears fought to tie the set 9-9 with Zoe Bozzay at the serve recording the tying points with a service ace. The set was then tied 10-10 with a kill by Olivia Hall followed by the Golden Bears taking the lead 12-10 with a kill from Abigial Bundy and a service ace from Taylor Deluga. The Rams responded with a 4-0 run to take back the lead 14-12. Two more 4-0 runs by the Rams gave them a 24-20 lead before the Rams sealed the final point to win the first set 25-22.
The Golden Bears opened the second set with a 3-1 lead only for Suffolk to bounce back with four unanswered points to take a 5-3 lead. After a couple points for the Golden Bears the Rams rallied again for three straight points to extend their lead 10-5. The back-and-forth action began with the two teams trading points before the Golden Bears were down 16-13 and the Rams scored three unanswered to extend their lead to six (19-13). Western New England answered with two points followed by three points to get back within two (20-18). Despite the Golden Bears' efforts, the Rams remained in control and won the second set 25-21.
The third set opened with the Rams earning a 9-0 lead before the Golden Bears were able to get on the board. After the Golden Bears fought for seven points the Rams still led 11-7 and rallied for five more points to take a 16-7 lead. The Golden Bears responded with a 4-0 run with Taylor Deluga at the serve earning a service ace for the Golden Bears' eleventh point. The Rams answered with five more points to lead by 10 (21-11) and the Golden Bears were unable to recover. The Rams won the third set 25-14 and took the match 3-0.
Inside the Numbers:
- The Golden Bears tallied 25 kills, 21 assists and 46 digs in the match along with seven service aces, six blocks and a hitting percentage of .018.
- Both Sarah Scott and Nina Sullivan earned seven kills apiece while Scott recorded seven digs and three service aces.
- Olivia Hall led the team in digs with ten while also tallying five kills.
- Taylor Geist recorded 14 assists in the match with seven digs and two kills.
