Wentworth Bests Volleyball 3-1

BOSTON, Mass. (September 25, 2021) – The Golden Bears traveled to Wentworth earlier today to continue conference play and came up short 3-1 in the match.

Records:

  • Wentworth: 10-5, 3-0 CCC
  • Western New England: 6-6, 1-1 CCC

How It Happened:

The Golden Bears opened the first set with a 2-0 lead before Wentworth tied the set 2-2. Western New England kept an advantage and led 11-9 before the Leopards got within one (11-10). This only motivated the Golden Bears with Sarah Scott at the serve to score six straight and force the Leopards into a timeout to re-evaluate. The Golden Bears scored one more time before Wentworth gained the serve. The Leopards later went on a 4-0 run followed by two 3-0 runs to gain the lead 23-21. The Golden Bears gathered themselves at a timeout and scored the next four points to win the first set 25-23.

In the second set, the Golden Bears continued their momentum to lead 6-1 forcing Wentworth into a timeout. The two teams began trading points before the Leopards scored four in a row to get within two of the Golden Bears (9-7). Wentworth then went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-10 lead. After the Golden Bears tied the set 11-11, the Leopards scored six in a row to lead 17-11. The Golden Bears slowly began chipping away at Wentworth's lead and scored four in a tow to get back within two (24-22) only for the Leopards to score the next point and win the set 25-22 and tie the match 1-1.

Wentworth led 8-4 in the third set when the Golden Bears rallied for four unanswered points to tie the set 9-9. The set was tied two more times before the Leopards took a 16-11 lead. The back-and-forth action quickly began but the Golden Bears were unable to retake the lead and dropped the third set 25-18. The Leopards now led the match 2-1.

Western New England took a 6-0 lead in the fourth set and later led 11-4. The Leopards responded with a 5-0 run to get within one (11-10) of the Golden Bears. The Golden Bears recorded two 3-0 runs almost back-to-back to take an 18-14 lead. The Leopards began chipping away and tied the set 21-21 and 22-22 before taking the lead and ultimately the set 25-23. The Leopards won the match 3-1.

Inside the Numbers:

  • The Golden Bears recorded 36 kills, 31 assists and 50 digs in the match with a .098 hitting percentage.
  • Olivia Hall led the Golden Bears with nine kills and recorded 10 digs.
  • Sarah Scott tallied eight kills and 11 digs while Becca Mayer led the team with 12 digs.
