Western New England Opens Fall Slate with 9-0 Win over Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September 19, 2018) – The Western New England University men's tennis team opened the fall portion of its 2018-19 schedule with a 9-0 victory over Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Celentano Courts.

Western New England got off to a strong start with victories in all three doubles matchups.

The Golden Bears' top duo of juniors David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) defeated Zak Levine and Alex Hale 8-1, while sophomores Matt Ottochian (Wallingford, Conn.) and Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-3 win over Zach Hart and Alex Proscino at No. 2.

In the No. 3 slot, the freshman duo of Joshua Jones (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Casey VanDenBossche (West Gardiner, Maine) posted a 6-0 victory over Eric Brown and Zach Monti.

The Golden Bears were also victorious in all six singles flights to complete the 9-0 victory. Kalmer topped Levine 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1, and Surawski took care of Hale, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2.

Sophomore Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) came away with a 6-0, 6-1 result over Hart in the No. 3 position, while junior Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) cruised past Proscino, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.

In the final two singles flights, sophomore Brendan O'Connell (North Providence, R.I.) earned a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Eric Brown at No. 5, and Russell won by default over Zach Monti at No. 6.
