Golden Bears Defeated by Nichols in Home Opener, 9-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 2, 2019) – The Western New England University men's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback to Nichols College on Tuesday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Volvo Outdoor Courts.

The Bison got off to a 3-0 lead with a sweep of doubles play. Nichols' top duo of Guilherme Barbosa and Brandon Howard posted an 8-2 win over junior David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and senior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.), while Blake Norton and Sebastian Penaloza edged juniors Hippolyte Bonnet (Lille, France) and Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) 8-6 at No. 2.

In the No. 3 doubles matchup, Peter Coletti and Igor Markowski teamed up for an 8-3 victory over senior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) and sophomore Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.).  

Singles action began with Penaloza's 6-1, 6-0 win over Surawski at No. 4, and Jack Donaldson followed with a 6-2, 6-1 result over Gordon at No. 6.

The Bison kept rolling the rest of the way, as Howard topped Kohut 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3, Coletti earned a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over junior Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) at No. 5, and Barbosa won a 7-5, 6-1 matchup over Bonnet at No. 2, before Norton ended the match with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win over Kalmer at No. 1.

Western New England (4-3, 1-1 CCC) hosts Johnson & Wales in non-conference action on Thursday, while Nichols (7-5, 2-0 CCC) returns home to take on Endicott on Saturday.
