Golden Bears Top Wentworth 9-0 for Fifth Consecutive Victory

WESTON, Mass. (April 16, 2019) – The Western New England University men's tennis team continued its strong play with a 9-0 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Regis Tennis Center on the campus of Regis College.

The Golden Bears posted a sweep of doubles play to open up a 3-0 lead in the match. Juniors Hippolyte Bonnet (Lille, France) and Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) got it started with an 8-0 victory over Jarrett North and Mun Chet at No. 2, and Western New England's top duo of senior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) and junior David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) followed with an 8-1 win over Tyler Hall and Tristan Maus. In the No. 3 doubles matchup, sophomore Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) and freshman Joshua Jones (Schenectady, N.Y.) defeated Harrison Maki and Taymour Mansi, 8-3.

Singles play also started off strong for the Golden Bears as Kohut blanked Maus, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Western New England clinched the match victory with Surawski's 6-1, 6-1 win over Maki at No. 4, before Bonnet rolled past North, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2.

In the final three singles matchups, senior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) earned a 6-1, 6-2 result over Matt Roberts at No. 6, junior Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Chet at No. 5, and Kalmer edged Hall 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1.

Western New England (9-3, 5-1 CCC), which has now won five consecutive matches, wraps up its regular season schedule next Wednesday at Salve Regina. Wentworth (6-11, 1-5 CCC) travels to Nichols next Wednesday for its regular season finale.
