Western New England Opens Spring Season with 9-0 Win over Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. (March 1, 2019) – The Western New England University men's tennis team opened its spring 2019 campaign with a 9-0 victory over Norwich University on Friday night in non-conference action at Shapiro Field House.

The Golden Bears got the match off to a strong start with wins in all three doubles matchups.

At the top flight, junior David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and senior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) edged Alexi Gilmore and Sam Beiter, 8-6.

Juniors Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Hippolyte Bonnet (Lille, France) teamed up for an 8-3 victory over Dylan Ackerman and Tim Santy at No. 2, while senior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) and sophomore Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) cruised to an 8-2 result over Noah Stillman and Abbie Barker at No. 3.

In singles action, Kalmer led off with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Ackerman at No. 1. Bonnet defeated Gilmore 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2, and Surawski earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Beiter at No. 3.

Western New England took the final three singles positions, as Kohut topped Tim Santy 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, Gordon rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Tim Birnbaum at No. 5, and junior Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) downed Abbie Barker, 6-1, 6-0.

Western New England (2-0) will be back in action in mid-March, when the Golden Bears travel to Florida for several matches. Norwich (0-2) hosts Castleton on Wednesday.
