Golden Bears Rally Past Gordon in Singles Play, 5-4

Kohut clinches win with 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles

WENHAM, Mass. (April 6, 2019) – The Western New England University men's tennis team edged Gordon College 5-4 on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

The Fighting Scots held the upper hand after doubles play with wins in two of the three matchups.

Senior Nathan Lookwhy and junior Jonathan Frink were responsible for the first point of the match as they registered an 8-1 victory over Western New England's top duo of junior David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and senior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.).

The Golden Bears evened the score at No. 2 doubles, as juniors Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Hippolyte Bonnet (Lille, France) defeated senior Kristopher Marineau and freshman Patrick Monahan, 8-3.

In the No. 3 doubles matchup, Gordon's tandem of sophomores Will Jeffreys and Richard Ryzi came away with an 8-6 win over Western New England's duo of sophomore Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) and freshman Joshua Jones (Schenectady, N.Y.) to give the Fighting Scots a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Western New England took control from there, however, as sophomore Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) evened the match at 2-2 with his 6-4, 6-0 win over Ryzi at No. 6 singles.

Kalmer dispatched Lookwhy 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 to put the Golden Bears in front 3-2, before junior Griffin Arnold's (Meriden, Conn.) 6-1, 6-3 result over Monahan at No. 5 made it 4-2 in favor of the visitors.

Western New England clinched the victory with Kohut's 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Marineau at the No. 3 spot, while Gordon picked up wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions courtesy of Frink and Jeffrys to bring the final margin to 5-4.

Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday, as Western New England (6-3, 2-1 CCC) hosts Curry and Gordon (4-10, 1-2 CCC) remains at home to take on Wentworth.
