Western New England Wraps up Regular Season with 9-0 Win over Salve Regina

Golden Bears win sixth consecutive match heading into postseason play

NEWPORT, R.I. (April 24, 2019) – The Western New England University men's tennis team completed its regular season schedule with a 9-0 victory over Salve Regina University on Wednesday afternoon at the Antone Academic Center.

The Golden Bears got off to a strong start with wins in all three doubles matchups. Junior David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and senior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) defeated Salve's top doubles duo of DJ Bisaillon and Trevor Jones 8-3, while Western New England's No. 2 tandem of juniors Hippolyte Bonnet (Lille, France) and Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) blanked Will Chasse and Aaron White, 8-0.

In the No. 3 doubles match, sophomores Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) and Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) earned an 8-1 result over Matthew Newfield and Michael Salazar.

Western New England carried its momentum into singles play with victories at all six flights to complete the sweep.

Kalmer won 6-0, 6-2 over Jones at No. 1, and Bonnet didn't drop a single game in his 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Bisaillon at No. 2.

Kohut topped Chasse 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, while Surawski earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over White at No. 4.

In the final two singles matchups, junior Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) edged Newfield 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5, and Gordon cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 result over Salazar at No. 6.

Western New England (10-3, 6-1 CCC), which has now won six consecutive matches heading into postseason play, earns the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CCC Tournament. The Golden Bears await their opponent for the semifinal round, which will be held next Wednesday, May 1st at the Volvo Outdoor Courts.
