Western New England Tops Wisconsin-Superior 8-1 in Florida

Golden Bears improve to 3-0 this season

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 17, 2019) – The Western New England University men's tennis team opened its spring break trip with an 8-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Sunday at Lake Cane Tennis Center.

Western New England set the tone by sweeping the doubles matchups to open up a 3-0 lead.

Senior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) and junior David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) teamed up for an 8-2 win over Josiah Borst and Will Sherman at the top flight, while juniors Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Hippolyte Bonnet (Lille, France) rolled to an 8-1 victory over Harry Simpson and Leonardo Paredes at No. 2.

In the third spot, senior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) and sophomore Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) defeated Gavin Mangan and Anthony Michels, 8-6.

Singles play was also dominated by Western New England, as the Golden Bears took five of the six matchups.

Kalmer topped Borst 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1, and Bonnet cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 result over Sherman at No 2.

Surawski was victorious against Simpson with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at No. 3, and Kohut bested Brady Anderson 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.

Wisconsin-Superior's lone win of the match came at No. 5 singles, where Carter Lamont came away with 6-3, 6-1 victory over Gordon.

In the final singles spot, junior Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) beat Min June Jang, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
