ST. LEO, Fla. (March 13, 2023) – The Western New England women's lacrosse team traveled to Florida for their spring games. In their first game there, they faced the Clarkson University Golden Knights at St. Leo University where the Golden Bears fell to the Golden Knights 18-15.

  • Western New England: 3-2
  • Clarkson University: 5-0

How it Happened: Clarkson Golden Knights earned a goal right out of the opening draw control 23 seconds into the game. They got two free position shots that were good, and one more goal halfway through the period before the Golden Bears could get on the scoreboard. Ally Ferraro scooped up a groundball following a missed shot and she was able to reach the net for WNE, trailing 4-1. Anabella Arias added a goal 1:58 seconds later, Golden Bears down two. In the last four minutes of the first quarter, the Golden Knights scored five more goals to take a 9-2 lead.

A draw control out of the break led to a CU goal in the first minute of the second, but WNE keeping their composure, got a free position attempt that led to Arias second goal. A yellow card on the Golden Knights gave Samantha Vitka a man up goal, and Maggie Holt got the ball in the net back-to-back times to start a comeback for the Golden Bears still down 10-6. The half ended with both teams picking up yellow cards and no more goals. The Golden Bears had 13 shots compared to the Golden Knights 19, but all the Golden Bear shots were on goal. Goalie Faith Graveline had five saves on 19 shots and Clarkson's goalie Jennaca McGill had seven saves on 13 shots.

The Golden Knights stuck to making a goal out of the first draw control of the period. Holt put her third goal in to answer CU, score 11-7. Five minutes of play in the third, the Golden Knights once again make it on to the scoreboard after the Golden Bears miss a few shot opportunities. WNE put two shots in to keep the game close, one at 6:16 and the other at 5:19, now only down three 12-9. Ferraro made it a two-point game with her second goal. 37 seconds on the clock in the period, a free position shot made a goal for CU and at the 19, a free position for Holt reached the back of the net to keep the Golden Bears only down two heading into the final quarter, 13-11.

Again, CU hit the first shot of the quarter, two free positions gave them two more goals, and they had picked back up a five-point lead. The Golden Bears Ally Hill scored on a free position, but a yellow card gave the Golden Knights a man-up goal. Hannah Jarvis knocked in a man-down goal, and again CU answered with their own goal, 18-14. Jarvis and Hill gave WNE another pair of goals before the last two minutes of the game.
