Celentano's Four Goal Game Lead Golden Bears Charge Over Worcester State, 17-7

WORCESTER, Mass. (March 21, 2023) – The Western New England women's lacrosse team were on the road in non-conference play, where they won over the Worcester State University Lancers 17-7.

How it Happened: The Golden Bears Mia Celentano and Ally Ferraro picked up goals in the first five minutes of the game. Two more were shot in by Kylie Buchanan almost a minute apart from each other. WNE had gained a 4-0 lead. Worcester State got on the scoreboard with two goals in a row, creating a small comeback. The Golden Bears answered with one reaching the back of the net in the remaining 39 seconds of the quarter taken by Hannah Jarvis for a 5-2 lead.

In quarter two, the Golden Bears kept up their momentum with two more goals in the opening five minutes, one by Anabella Arias and Celentano's second of the evening. A full minute didn't go by before the Lancers shot one in on the other side of the field. WNE then went for a hot streak of shooting in four goals in a row, all within less than a minute of each other. Emmy Burns led the charge, Ally Hill got two to go in, and Buchanan on fire with her third of the game. They had secured an 11-3 game lead. Worcester State put two more shots in, but it was matched by two more from the Golden Bears, Celentano making her third goal of the game. At the half, the score was 13-5. The Golden Bears out shot the Lancers 31-11, goalie Faith Graveline had five saves while Savanna Rosado had 12.

Early in the second half of the game, Worcester State was handed a yellow card that gave WNE a man up goal shot in by Madisyn Crotta. It was a rough third quarter where the Lancers did not score and WNE put only one more in at the end of the third, ahead 15-5. Graveline earned two more saves before exiting the game and Emily Lake entered. WSU got the first goal of the final quarter to go in, Jarvis forced one in soon after. The Lancers responded with another, and the last goal of the game belonged to Celentano, matching her career high of four goals in a game. The Golden Bears beat the Lancers with a final score of 17-7.  

Around the Edges:

  • Mia Celentano led the Golden Bears with four goals and two assists. She had a total of nine shots with four on goal.
  • Kylie Buchanan contributed three of the other 17 Golden Bear goals, adding one assist.
  • Hannah Jarvis, Ally Hill, and Ally Ferraro put in two goals each.
  • Goalie Faith Graveline concluded the night with seven saves on 12 shots, collecting the game's win. Emily Lake added two more for the Golden Bears. The Lancer goalie, Savanna Rosado had 18 saves on 35 shots.
