Holt, Jarvis Leads WNE into CCC Semifinals, Defeating Curry 20-12

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 29, 2023) – Western New England women's lacrosse team hosted Curry College in the Quarterfinals of the CCC playoffs who they defeated 20-12 to advance to the semifinals.

Records:

  • Western New England: 13-5
  • Curry College: 5-11

How it Happened: Setting the pace of the game for the Golden Bears, Madisyn Crotta picked up her first goal in the opening minute. WNE had control over the ball for most of the first quarter until almost halfway through, Curry caused a turnover and took it in to throw one in the back of the net. They took a lead with 3:20 on the clock. The Golden Bears responded with four goals before time expired in the quarter, two of them from Hannah Jarvis, and WNE with a lead of 5-2.

Ally Hill came out to score in the first minute of the second quarter, Mia Celentano followed for the Golden Bears to increase their lead 7-2. Curry answered by throwing in a goal out of the next draw control. It was a high scoring quarter for both teams, Grayson Groolgasian shot in her second for Curry and Natalie Keenan put two in this quarter. The Golden Bears held a six-point lead for most of the second, Samantha Vitka getting two goals before the half for an 11-6 lead.

A strong third quarter for WNE who came out to put the ball in the net six more times with multiple players scoring their second or third goals. Maggie Holt scored two in three minutes, along with Jarvis. The Golden Bears only allowed one goal for Curry in the third while increasing their lead to double digits. They ended the quarter with a score 18-7. Curry came out in the fourth with more intensity, outscoring WNE five goals to two. The Golden Bears held their lead until time ran off the clock, defeating Curry 20-12 to advance to the Semifinals.

Inside the Crease:

  • The Golden Bears outshot Curry College 43-18 and more draw controls 27-8. Curry had more groundballs 17-15 and caused more turnovers 18-17.
  • Hannah Jarvis led the Golden Bears with five goals, one assist, four draw controls, and two groundballs.
  • Kylie Buchana shot in four goals on four shots for the Golden Bears, and Maggie Holt added three goals, five draw controls, and a groundball.
  • Samantha Vitka contributed two goals and two assists.

Up Next on the Schedule:

  • The Golden Bears advance to the Semifinal round of the CCC which will be held on Wednesday May 3. They will be traveling to Roger Williams University to take on the Hawks.
