Women's Lacrosse Blows By Salve Regina 17-9, Win Seventh Straight

NEWPORT, R.I. (April 18, 2023) – Western New England women's lacrosse team earned their seventh straight win after traveling to Newport for conference play against Salve Regina Seahawks who they defeated 17-9.

Records:

  • Western New England: 11-4, 5-1 CCC
  • Salve Regina University: 7-6, 4-2 CCC

How it Happened: The Golden Bears started the game by Kylie Buchanan putting in a goal in the first 40 seconds, but they soon fell 2-1 by giving the Seahawks a couple of free position shots. The remainder of the first quarter was all WNE with five different players knocking the ball in the net to take a 6-2 lead over Salve Regina.

Mia Celentano scored her second goal in the opening minutes of the second, and Seahawks Kelly Ventura shot in hers as well. Salve created more plays for themselves in this quarter trying to comeback in it with three goals while holding the Golden Bears to two. The score at halftime was 8-5. Goalie Faith Graveline had just two saves in this half while Grace Hsesche had seven.

Salve Regina caused a turnover out of the draw control to pick up the first goal of the second half and to trail by only two to the Golden Bears. WNE's Hannah Jarvis fought to score the next one to keep some separation, but the Seahawks were not backing down. They got two in a row to reach the back of the net with the help of Ventura and now were within one point of WNE, 9-8. The Golden Bears responded by dominating the rest of the third. Samantha Vitka, Celentano, and Jarvis all earned another goal, and took the Golden Bears on top 12-8.

In the final quarter, the Golden Bears couldn't stop the Seahawks from scoring first, but they didn't reach the net again. Madisyn Crotta and Anabella Arias but a goal on their stats and Jarvis, Vitka, and Celentano added more to the total score. the Golden Bears won the game 17-9 against the Seahawks and advance to 5-1 in the CCC with a seven game win streak.

  • The Golden Bears outshot the Seahawks 38-20, and they had more draw controls 24-6. The Seahawks controlled more draws at 19-15.
  • Hannah Jarvis combined for four goals and two assists with one groundball.
  • Mia Celentano added four goals of her own plus one assist and two groundballs.
  • Samantha Vitka shot in three goals on three shots on goal, had 10 draw controls, and a groundball.
