Ferraro Nets 100th Career Point in Victory over NIchols, 21-3

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 26, 2023) – Western New England women's lacrosse team had their last regular season home game against the Nichols College Bison. The Golden Bears Ally Ferraro earned her 100th career point while her team defeated the Bison 21-3 and earn a third seed in the CCC playoffs.

Records:

  • Western New England: 12-5, 6-2 CCC
  • Nichols College: 10-6, 2-6 CCC

How it Happened: The Golden Bears had an impressive open to the game, picking up seven goals while shutting out the Nichols College Bison. The first goal of the game was shot in by Maggie Holt in the first minute of the quarter. The next Golden Bear to reach the back of the net was Kylie Buchanan two minutes later. Both Hannah Jarvis and Samantha Vitka scored two goals, and Anabella Arias added one for the 7-0 lead. Starting goalie Faith Graveline had four saves on four shots before exiting the game.

In the second quarter, it took a few plays before either team got the ball in the net. After a few fouls, and a yellow card handed to the Bison, Mia Celentano put in her first goal of the game on a free position in a man up opportunity. The Golden Bears scored once again before Nichols got one to reach the back of the net with 6:15 left in the first half of play for a score of 9-1, WNE. To end the second, Arias scored her second goal for WNE. There were no goalie saves for the Golden Bears and the Bison's goalie, Keri Tremblay, had nine on 19 shots in the first half.

Two goals for Arias to start the third quarter and two more for Celentano proceeding that. Ally Ferrao, recording two assists early, shot in a goal to give her a career 100 points as a Golden Bear, and 15-1 lead over the Bison. Nichols picked up their second goal in the remaining three minutes of the third but let WNE shoot in one more to conclude the third on top 16-2. The Bison entered a new goalie for the second half, Jessica Volpi who came away with two saves on 13 shots. Emile Lake entered the game for WNE in the second quarter and picked up her first save of the game.

The final quarter had no signs of the Golden Bears letting up. Mariella Biceglia and Ferraro scored within the first five minutes. There was a lot a scrappy play back-and-forth, both teams struggling to make it out the clear. The Golden Bears got three more goals to reach the back of the net in the fourth, and the Bison put one in in the final 30 seconds. The Golden Bears finish with a win 21-3 in their final regular season game to earn a three seed in the CCC playoffs.

Inside the Crease:

  • The Golden Bears outshot the Bison 40-14, more draw controls 17-9, and more groundballs 19-16.
  • Goalie Emily Lake finished the game for the Golden Bears and collected her first season win with three saves on six shots. Starting goalie for the Bison collected the loss with nine saves on 19 shots.
  • Ally Ferraro made her career 100th point with two goals and two assists on the day.
  • Anabella Arias shot in five goals on five shots for the Golden Bears, and Mia Celentano added four goals, one assist, one groundball, and one draw control.
  • Samantha Vitka contributed an impressive four points and four assists, plus four draw controls and a groundball.
