Women's Lacrosse Drops CCC Opener At Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. (March 29, 2023) – The Western New England women's lacrosse team had their first conference game on the road against the Roger Williams University Hawks who the Golden Bears fell to 20-10.

Records:

  • Roger Williams University: 4-4, 1-0 CCC

How it Happened: Roger Williams got off to 3-0 start before Maggie Holt reached the back of the net to get the Golden Bears on the scoreboard. It was followed by a goal from Mia Celentano and a free position goal by Kylie Buchanan to even up the score 3-3 with 6:52 remaining in the first quarter. The Hawks took back the lead with two more goals, one a man-up. WNE forced a turnover, and Hannah Jarvis shot one in to trail by one, 5-4. Roger Williams answered with a 4-0 streak to end the first on top 9-4.

Holt put another one in for WNE following a Hawks goal in the opening two minutes of the second. They had to fight for their next couple of goals but took a 12-5 lead over the Golden Bears. Anabella Arias cut it to six, The Hawks shot one in right out of the draw, back to a seven-point lead. In the last minute of the half, RWU reached the back the net two more times. They had taken a 15-6 advantage after two quarters of play. RWU outshot the Golden Bears 33-11 in that half, and goalie Faith Graveline had nine saves to Caroline Roach's two.

The Golden Bears got the first goal of the second half on a free position taken by Samantha Vitka in the first five minutes. The next goal didn't come until the last five minutes in the third, and it was put in by the Hawks. WNE, staying in the fight, picked up a goal a minute after, Celentano's second of the game, and Vitka scored her second with nine seconds on the clock. The Golden Bears were still behind 16-9 with one more quarter to play. In the third, The Golden Bears outshot the Hawks 8-5 and had two more saves. RWU scored three more goals to give them a 10-point lead, 19-9 in the final period. Buchanan got one more to go in the back of the net for WNE, but the Hawks did as well. The final score of the game was 20-10, Roger Williams.

Around the Edges:

  • The Hawks had 45 shots and 35 shots on goal against the Golden Bears. Julia Kelley had five RWU goals. WNE had 26 shots with 16 of them being on goal.
  • Kylie Buchanan had two goals and one assists for the Golden Bears while scooping up one groundball.
  • Maggie Holt, Samantha Vitka, and Mia Celentano also scored two goals for WNE.
  • Goalie Faith Graveline concluded the night with 15 saves on 35 shots and taking her fourth loss of the season. RWU goalie, Caroline Roach had six saves on 16 shots.
