Men’s Wrestling Splits with Springfield College & STCC in Springfield City Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 12, 2022) – The Western New England men's wrestling team would compete in the Springfield City Championships over the weekend, going 1-1, falling just short to Springfield College before beating Springfield Technical Community College. 

How it Happened (vs. Springfield College):

The Golden Bears would come up short in the first four bouts of the match against the Pride as Dan McLaughlin, Austin Monteiro, Colby Reilly and James Barrett would all go down to get the Pride an early lead on the Golden Bears. All decisions came down to the wire as Monteiro would be dropped in a 6-5 decision, Reilly would be sent down in a mere 7-4 decision, while Barrett dropped an 8-6 decision in the 149 lb. weight class. Keon Ayala would get Western New England their first win in the match in the 157 lb. weight class, grabbing a major decision victory over Springfield's Jeremy Scutellaro, 14-4. Sean Monteiro (165 lb), and CJ Glaropoulos (174 lb.) would also collect major decision victories for the Golden Bears, collecting four points each, putting the score at 15-12 in favor of Springfield College.

Springfield's Max Gryzmala would break Western New England's win streak, defeating Griffin Ostrom by a small 7-6 margin in the 184 lb. weight class. Darby McLaughlin collected a win for WNE in the 197 lb. weight class, pulling off a major decision win. Western New England would drop the 285 lb. weight class match, falling 24-16 to Springfield College to open the day.

How it Happened (vs. STCC):

In the 125 lb. weight class, Western New England saw Clayton O'Connor come away with a victory via major decision to get the Golden Bears off on the right track. Eight of the ten bouts would belong to WNE, en-route to a 33-6 win over Springfield Technical Community College. Austin Monteiro (133 lb.) and Colby Reilly (141 lb.) would collect major decision wins. Keon Ayala (157 lb.) would pick up the victory via forfeit for the Golden Bears, while teammates Tristan Julian (165 lb.) and Jaylen Hawkins (174 lb.) would take wins via fall. Rounding out the wins for WNE were Tyreece Cherival (184 lb.) and Spencer Dickinson (285 lb.) to get WNE their 33-6 win over Springfield Technical Community College, going 1-1 on the day.
