Austin Monteiro Wins 133 lb. Weight Class at Williams Open

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. (January 7, 2023) – The Western New England men's wrestling team returned to the mats on Saturday morning, traveling to Williams College for the Williams Open. Western New England saw for of their own place in the top four of their respective weight classes.

How it Happened, 133 lb. Weight Class:
First Year Austin Monteiro would place first in the 133 lb. weight class, winning all four matches on the afternoon to win his first weight class in his young career. In the championship round one, Monteiro would receive a bye to automatically head into the QF match. In that match Monteiro would defeat Greyson Merola of Norwich University via tech-fall, 16-0, to move into the semifinal match. The First Year would face Roger Williams' Chris Tringall, which would be a decision victory, 4-3, to send Monteiro into the championship match. In a cross-town rival match, Monteiro would defeat Springfield College's Brayan Mendez-Membreno to claim his first ever weight class championship. 

157 lb. Weight Class:

Cameron Hines would compete in the 157 lb. weight class, coming in third place at the Williams Open. Hines would be defeated in his first match of the morning, though would come all the way back and go 5-0 in his final five matches of the day to claim third place in the weight class. Hines would take down Robert Tarasuk of Plymouth State University via fall in 3:46 in the first round of the consolation bracket. In the second round, the sophomore won by decision over Hiyuma Nagai of Springfield College to continue his winning streak. Hine swould defeat Springfield College's Jared Swartz in the third round of the consolation bracket while also take down Roger Williams' Ben Bariso to make it into the third-place match which also was a win for Hines who came away with the 5-3 decision victory over Cameron Wooldridge to take third place in the 157 lb. weight class. 

165 lb. Weight Class:
Tristan Julian would run a win streak of his own to place fourth in the 165 lb. weight class. After also dropping his first match of the afternoon, Julian would win four straight matches, defeating Elijah Pierce, Eamon Garrity-Rokous (Williams College), Sam Wilson (Norwich University), and Anthony Ostrander (Roger Williams University) to make it to the second-place match on the afternoon. Julian's win streak would come to an end in the second-place match after a loss via fall in a tough 6:52 battle would lead to a third-place finish for the sophomore. 

165 lb. Weight Class:
Sean Monteiro would need four matches before the senior was able to take second place in the 165 lb. weight class. Monteiro would win via major decision over Anthony DiGennaeo of Springfield College before defeating Sam Wilson, and Joshua Ducharme to make it to the first-place match of the championship bracket. Monteiro would finish the day in second place, going 4-1 overall.
