11 Golden Bears Named to NEWA All-Academic Team, Two Named to All-NEWA Teams

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 4, 2023) – The Western New England men's wrestling team earned 11 spots on the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA)'s All-Academic Team while two others headline the All-NEWA Team's, as presented by the NEWA committee. 

NEWA All-Academic Team:
Western New England men's wrestling earned 11 spots on the NEWA All-Academic Team which included Michael Blumh (Lake Winola, Pa.), Peter Charnley (Lyman, N.H.), Tyreece Cherival (Springfield, Mass.), Samuel Dow (Dryden, N.Y.), Nick Faraci (Rocky Hill, Conn.), Charles Maloy (Pocono Summit, Pa.),  Sean Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.), Colby Reilly (Cumberland, R.I.), Colin Reilly (Coxsackle, N.Y.), Colsten Volpe (Binghamton, N.Y.), and Ethan Volpe (Avon, Conn.). C. Volpe, Maloy, Reilly, Dow, and Faraci were all named to the NEWA All-Academic Team for the second time in their careers. 

All 16 teams that are represented in the New England Wrestling Association had representatives on the All-Academic Team. 

All-NEWA Team:

The Golden Bears placed two on the All-NEWA teams with Austin Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) being named to the All-NEWA Rookie Team (133 lb. weight class), and Darby McLaughlin (Springfield, Mass.) earning All-NEWA Honorable Mention (197 lb. weight class). 

Monteiro won 12 matches this season during his first-year campaign, earning 26 points for WNE. The Wilbraham, Massachusetts native won two matches via fall, one tech-fall win, one major decision victory and seven wins via decision. 

McLaughlin led the Golden Bears with 25 victories on the season, competing in 36 matches, earning a team best 78.5 points. McLaughlin won six matches via fall on the season while winning two tech-fall victories, seven major decision victories, and eight decision victories. 

The Golden Bears wrapped up the 2022-2023 season with six team victories, including a win at home against No. 15 Rhode Island College.
