Men’s Wrestling Places Three at Doug Parker Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 19, 2022) – The Western New England men's wrestling mean saw three Golden Bears place in their respective weight classes in the Doug Parker Invitational, hosted by Springfield College on Saturday afternoon. 

How it Happened:

Sean Monteiro (165 lbs.) took a bye victory to move into the round of 16 in his weight class. The senior would move on to defeat Hack Carrozzi of Plymouth State University in the round via fall in 3:44 to move into the quarterfinal match. A major decision victory over Springfield College's Myles Leonard 13-3 would get WNE's Monteiro into the semifinal match, where he would face Rhode Island College's Nate Lackman. Monteiro would fall in the match via tech-fall though would come away with a win in the 4th place match over Jack Reusing in a close 11-10 decision finishing the day in fourth place in the 165 lb. weight class. 

In the 184 lb. weight class, Western New England's Griffin Ostrom would place 6th in the event. Ostrom would defeat Maxwell Hall of Williams College in a 4-2 fall victory in the round of 32. In the round of 16, Ostromcollected a 3-1 decision victory over Daryl Cowley of US Merchant Marine Academy to move into the round of eight for Western New England. After dropping the match in an 11-10 decision in the quarterfinal round, Ostrom would finish the afternoon in 6th place after defeating Maxwell Hall, going 3-2 on the day. 

In the 197 lb. weight class, Western New England saw Darby McLaughlin place third overall. McLaughlin would get by Tommy Goodwin of Williams College, Doug Clark of Springfield College, Matt Kelly of New York University and Kevon Berry of Centenary University to take third place in the event. McLaughlin would finish 3-1 on the afternoon for the Golden Bears. 

As a team, Western New England would finish 10th of 16 teams in the event. Coast Guard Academy would take the top spot, collecting three first place winners and five second place athletes. WNE finished the afternoon's event with 60.5 points.
