Men’s Wrestling Takes Two of Three Dual Matches at RWU Duals

BRISTOL, R.I. (December 3, 2022) – The Western New England men's wrestling team took two wins on Saturday morning into the afternoon, defeating New Jersey City University 30-19 and Hunter College 51-4 while dropping a 35-12 decision to New York University at the Roger Williams University Duals. 

How it Happened: vs. No. 13 New York University

Dan McLaughlin opened with a win for the Golden Bears in the 125 lb. weight class, defeating New York University's Thomas Fischer in an 8-5 decision. NYU would take the 133 lb. weight class, followed by the 141 lb. weight class  followed by the 141 lb. weight class. James Barrett would win his second match in as many days, winning a 7-4 decision in the 149 lb. weight class. NYU would rip off the next five matches to take down Western New England, while Devin Flagg would take a forfeit win with NYU winning 35-12. 

How it Happened: vs. New Jersey City University

Western New England would drop the first two matches of the match, losing the 125 lb. weight class as well as the 133 lb. weight class, though would come storming back after Colby Reilly would start a Golden Bears rally grabbing six WNE points after a fall in 2:46. NYU would take the 149 lb. weight class, though Western New England would come back and take the next two when Keon Ayala won the 157 lb. weight class on a 4-2 decision, followed by a 2:30 fall victory from Tristan Julian at the 165 lb. weight class. Western New England would take the final three matches of the event when Johnny Harwood would win via forfeit, while Darby McLaughlin would continue his dominance on the mat, winning a 2-1 decision while Charles Maloy would take the victory in the 285 lb. weight class, winning via fall in 2:42. Western New England would defeat New Jersey City 30-19. 

How it Happened: vs. Hunter College

The Golden Bears would put together a dominant performance against Hunter College, winning all but one weight class. Clayton O'Connor would collect a fall victory in 1:40 at the 125 lb. weight class. Dan McLaughlin took down Oev Urbas via fall in 1:26 for the victory at the 133 lb. weight class. Colby Reilly (141 lb.), Tristan Julian, Colsten Volpe, Griffin Ostrom and Darby McLaughlin would collect forfeit victories while Keon Ayala would notch a tech-fall victory 15-0 in 2:21 to cap off the 51-4 victory for the Golden Bears.
