Golden Bears Men’s Wrestling Competes at NEWA Duals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 22, 2023) – The Western New England men's wrestling team battelled at the NEWA Duals on Sunday, hosted by Springfield College. 

How it Happened:

Western New England would open with a team loss against Williams College, dropping the match 30-16. In the match, the Golden Bears saw four of their own claim victories as Colby Reilly (141 lb. weight class), Sean Monteiro (165 lb. weight class), Darby McLaughlin (197 lb. weight class), and Spencer Dickinson (285 lb. weight class) would all grabs wins for the Golden Bears, though would fall short in their opening round match. 

From there, Western New England would match with New England College in the consolation quarterfinal bracket. WNE would claim victories in six of the ten matches over the Pilgrims to move into the semifinals of the consolation bracket. In the win, Colby Reilly (TF, 19-3), James Barrett (TF 18-0), Keon Ayala (FF), Sean Monteiro (FF), Jaylen Hawkins (FF), and Darby McLaughlin (Decision, 8-1), would all lead the Golden Bears to a victory. 

In the semifinal match. Western New England would meet Rhode Island College and would come up short, falling 20-18 overall. Colby Reilly (MD 11-0), James Barrett (MD 14-5), Tristan Julian (Decision, 9-5), Griffin Ostrom (Decision, 10-4), and Johnny Harwood (MD, 11-2) would all come away with wins for WNE, though the Golden Bears would fall out of the consolation championship match and into the third-place match. 

In the third-place consolation bracket match, Western New England would fall short to the Engineers of Worcester Polytechnic Institute by a score of 27-20. Wins for Colby Reilly, James Barrett, Griffin Ostrom, and Darby McLaughlin would pace the Golden Bears, though eventually would drop the match, placing fourth overall in the consolation bracket. 

Overall, Johnson & Wales University would be crowned champions, defeating Coast Guard 23-15 in the championship match.  Western New England say Colby Reilly go 4-0 on the day, while Sean Monteiro would win two matches on the day.
