Men’s Wrestling Defeats Plymouth State at Southern Maine Quad

GORHAM, Maine (February 4, 2023) – The Western New England men's wrestling team battled at the Southern Maine quads on Saturday afternoon, dropping decisions to the hosting Huskies as well as Trinity (Conn.) University, while coming away with a 45-6 win over the Panthers of Plymouth State University.

How it Happened:
Southern Maine 27, WNE 19

Western New England would open the first match of the day with a win in the 125 lb. match via forfeit as Dan McLaughlin would take the win. USM would collect the next four wins, taking the 133 lb., 141 lb., 149 lb., and 157 lb. weight class matches. Sean Monteiro would come away with a 6-5 decision victory over Southern Maine's Tyler Hanes to get WNE back on the board. Jaylen Hawkins would continue the winning on the mats for the Golden Bears, coming away with a major decision victory for WNE, 17-5 to grab four points, seeing WNE trail 21-13. WNE would win the next two matches after Griffin Ostrom would win via decision, 6-2 in the 184 lb. weight class while Darby McLaughlin continued his consistency on the mat, winning 11-4 over Anthony Mears of USM.  WNE would fall in the 285 lb. match, falling 27-19 to the Huskies.

Trinity (Conn.) University 27, WNE 21

Western New England would again open with a forfeit victory in the 125 lb. weight class, taking the first six points of the match. The Golden Bears picked up a win in the 133 lb. weight class match when Dan McLaughlin would collect a pin fall victory over Alex Paxiha in 5:27, giving WNE a 12-0 lead. Trinity would collect the next four victories taking a 24-12 lead. Jaylen Hawkins would win his second match of the afternoon after pinning Adam Frost in 3:49 while Griffin Ostrom would also collect his second win, taking a 7-2 decision victory for the Golden Bears. Western New England would fall 27-21 in the match.

WNE 45, Plymouth State 6

Dan McLaughlin opened the match with a pin fall victory over Nick Savariego in 2:43 to get Western New England on the board quickly. Two forfeits would earn Nick Faraci and Colby Riley victories in the 133 lb., and 141 lb. matches. Cam Hines came away with his first win of the afternoon over Plymouth's Tyler O'Mara on a 7-0 decision. Tristian Julian took down his opponent in the 165 lb. weight class match while teammates Griffin Ostrom, Darby McLaughlin and Spencer Dickinson would all collect wins in their respective weight classes to defeat Plymouth State, picking up Western New England's first victory of the afternoon.

WNE would go 1-2 on the day while Griffin Ostrom and Dan McLaughlin would both go 3-0 on the day.
