Austin Monteiro Named NEWA Rookie of the Week, Two Ranked in Fourth NEWA Rankings

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 18, 2023) 
– The Western New England men's wrestling team saw two ranked in the top eight of their respective weight classes while first year Austin Monteiro was named New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Rookie of the Week after his standout performance at the Will Abele Invitational over the weekend. 

Austin Monteiro continued to shine on the mat for the Golden Bears, picking up third place in the 133 lb. weight class event at the Will Abele Invitational, hosted by Ursinus College this past weekend. Monteiro recorded a fall victory over American International College's Aaron Morocho in 6:57, while also grabbing victories over RIT's Lee Rubin in sudden victory and TCNJ's Kyle Nase in a 3-1 decision. On the season, the Wilbraham, Massachusetts native has collected ten victories, earning 22.5 team points. Monteiro has recorded two victories via fall, one TF win, one major decision victory and five wins via decision. 

Western New England also saw two of their own crack the NEWA individual rankings with Sean Monteiro (165 lb.) and Darby McLaughlin (197 lb.) grabbing honors. Monteiro recorded a 7-6 victory last week in a dual match against Roger Williams University, while following that performance up with a second-place finish in the weight class at the Will Abele Invitational. Monteiro would collect four victories on the day before falling in the 165 lb. weight class championship match. On the season, the senior has won 13 of his 20 matches, recording five fall victories, five major decision wins and three decision victories. Monteiro sits in the 8th spot of the 165 lb. weight class rankings. 

Darby McLaughlin leads Western New England with 15 victories on the season including a 9-5 decision win over Roger Williams University in last week's dual match. McLaughlin also shined at the Will Abele Invitational, picking up fourth place in the 197 lb. weight class. McLaughlin would collect three victories on the afternoon on his way to his fourth-place finish, including collecting his team leading sixth major decision victory. On the season, McLaughlin has 15 wins in 22 matches, two via fall, one TF, six MD, and five decisions. The Springfield, Massachusetts native is ranked fourth in the 197 lb. weight class.
