Women's Lacrosse Bows Out of CCC Tournament in Semifinal Round

BRISTOL, R.I. (May 3, 2023) – The #3 seed Western New England women's lacrosse team traveled to the #2 seed Roger Williams University for the CCC Semifinals where the Golden Bears battled it out, but ultimately fell to the Hawks 19-5 to end their '23 season.

Records:

  • Western New England: 13-6
  • Roger Williams University: 13-6

How it Happened: To kick off the action, Roger Williams scored the first goal of the game straight from the draw control. The Golden Bears worked their way to even up the score with Mia Celentano throwing it in after almost five minutes of the quarter ticked away. WNE took the lead at the 9:30 mark as Maggie Holt got one to reach the back of the net to go up 2-1. To tie it up, the Hawks Mia Pantano picked up a goal, and they got one more before the end of the quarter to retake the lead 3-2.

Roger Williams Mandy Beck threw in her second and third goal in the beginning of the second quarter. They went on a run and shut out the Golden Bears. Lily Cunningham also shot in her second goal with the Hawks putting in eight goals in the quarter. They had an 11-2 lead entering the half. Goalie Faith Graveline had a total of five saves on 20 shots for the Golden Bears in the first half of play while Hawks goalie Zoey Cormican had seven saves on 11 shots.

The Golden Bears came out the half with a lot of fight. Holt scored consecutive goals before the team received two yellow cards to give RWU two chances with a man up opportunity. The Hawks capitalized on both. They also put another ball in the back of the net in the final three seconds of the third to have a double-digit lead 14-4 at the top of the fourth. The Hawks still outshot the Golden Bears 8-6 in this third, each goalie had three saves.

In the final quarter of the game, senior Hannah Jarvis was quick to get the ball to the back of the net for WNE. It was out shadowed by a free position goal for Brooke McErlain on the Hawks side to keep them up double-digits. A yellow card for the Golden Bears added another Man-up goal to the Hawks stats in the fourth. The last six and half minutes, RWU reached the back of the net four more times to secure their win over the Golden Bears 20-5. WNE conclude the season with a record of 13-6.

Inside the Crease:

  • The Hawks outshot the Golden Bears 38-19 with more draw controls 15-12, and more groundballs 19-18. They also caused more turnovers 17-15.
  • Goalie Faith Graveline finished the game with nine saves on 29 shots, finishing the season 12-5. Hawks goalie Zoey Cormican had 10 saves on 15 shots.
  • The Golden Bears were led by freshman Maggie Holt who had three goals on four SOG, adding two draw controls.
  • Hannah Jarvis contributed a goal and assists in her final game with three draw controls and one groundball.
  • Samantha Vitka pulled out six draw controls and three grounballs.

Up Next on the Schedule:

  • This is the final game of the women's lacrosse '23 season. They finished with a 13-6 record overall and concluded at the CCC semifinals. The Golden Bears will return to action for the 2023-24 season.
  • The Hawks advance to the CCC Championship against the Endicott College Gulls. This game will take place on May 6.
