Western New England College falls to Elmira and WPI in non-conference action

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Western New England College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of closely contested matches on Saturday (Oct. 16) to non-conference opponents Elmira and WPI. 

In the opening match of the day, Elmira defeated Western New England College 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 19-25, and 25-18).

Junior middle hitter Brittany Raykoske (Johnstown, NY) led the Soaring Eagles with 19 kills while sophomore outside hitter Sasha Zavadska (Bratislava, SVK) had a double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs. Senior setter Tesia Kaczynski (Mansfield, PA) dished out 50 assists.

The Golden Bears received 13 kills apiece from seniors Lauren Landri (New Canaan, CT) and Inna Sergeychik (West Springfield, MA). Senior setter Katharina Boes (Buffalo Grove, IL) had 39 assists.

Western New England College closed the day by dropping a tough 3-2 match to WPI (23-25, 21-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-13).

Sophomore outside hitter Elyssa Dorenfield (Reading, MA) had a double-double for the Engineers with 19 kills and 14 digs.

Landri and Sergeychik again led the Golden Bears with 15 kills each while Boes contributed 48 assists in the match.

Elmira defeated WPI 3-0 in the other match of the day (25-6, 25-22, 25-22).

Elmira improves to 17-5 overall; WPI now stands at 19-5 on the year, and WNEC drops to 8-14.

The Golden Bears return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 19) at 7:00 p.m. to face Colby-Sawyer in New London, NH for a critical conference match.
