Nor'easters rally to defeat Western New England College 3-2 in TCCC Quarterfinals

- The fourth-seeded University of New England College women's volleyball team rallied to win the final two sets to take a 3-2 victory over fifth-seeded  Western New England College Tuesday night (Nov. 2) in a quarterfinal round match of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Championship.

The game scores were 25-21, 23-25, 15-25, 25-22, and 15-13.

The Nor'easters defeated the Golden Bears by the same score last Saturday (Oct. 30) in Springfield in the final match of the regular season.

Western New England College appeared heading for a victory after taking a 2-1 lead after three sets, and moving to a 13-6 advantage in the fourth game. University of New England came back for a three-point win to force the fifth and deciding set.

The fifth set went back and forth as the hosts jumped to leads of 4-1 and 8-3 before the Golden Bears went on a 7-2 run to tie the game at 10-10. The Nor'easters answered with three straight points and held at 14-13 edge when senior outside hitter Kristen Edwards (Laconia, NH) wrapped up the win with her match high 19th kill. She finished with a .378 hitting percentage for the match.

University of New England had two players compile double-doubles as sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Cashell (Merrimack, NH) had 10 kills and 15 digs while freshman setter Maria Kuehl (Middleton, NH) had 21 assists and 11 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Kirsta Adie (Tyngsboro, MA) had a game high 20 digs.

Senior outside hitter Samantha Shomo (Glen Gardner, NJ) led four Western New England College players in double figures with 14 kills. She had one of her best games of the season with a .314 hitting percentage and finished with a double-double after compiling 14 digs.

Senior middle blocker Lauren Landri (New Canaan, CT) had a solid outing with 13 kills and five blocks. Freshman outside hitter Maureen Pollet (Dix Hills, NY) also contributed 13 kills. Junior right side hitter Inna Sergeychik (West Springfield, MA) chipped-in with 10 kills.

Senior setter Katharina Boes (Buffalo Grove, IL) notched a double-double with a game-high 38 assists to go along with 12 digs and three service aces. Senior libero Marci Egbert (Wayne, NJ) had a team high 18 digs.

UNE improves to 20-10 and advances to meet top-seeded Roger Williams (a 3-0 winner over eighth-seeded Regis) Thursday (Nov. 4) in Bristol, Rhode Island.

Western New England College ends its season with a 10-20 mark.
