LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Western New England University women’s volleyball program has earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2011-12 school year. Western New England – coached by Bret Stothart – was one of 90 teams, or just 17 percent of all institutions in NCAA Division III, to achieve this honor.

"Earning this prestigious award is an impressive accomplishment for our program and says a lot about the character and focus of the team," Stothart said. "Those same qualities that help our players succeed in the classroom also help to ensure our team's continued success on the volleyball court and in each of their lives long after they've moved beyond their collegiate careers."

The award, which was initiated in 1992, recognizes collegiate volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. The Golden Bears registered a 3.52 team GPA, which also led the 19-sport intercollegiate program at WNE as well as the Commonwealth Coast Conference volleyball members.
Thirteen WNE volleyball student-athletes recorded at least a 3.00 GPA during the traditional fall season, including a half-dozen that turned in a 3.7 or better.
