Successful seasons ends as Western New England falls to Roger Williams in CCC tourney

BRISTOL, R.I. – The fourth-seeded Western New England women’s volleyball team had a successful season come to an end with a 3-0 loss at top-seeded Roger Williams in a semifinal round match of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship Thursday evening (Nov. 3) at the Campus Rec Center. The game scores were 25-10, 25-23, and 25-14.

Sophomore middle hitter Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, CT) led the Hawks with 11 kills while senior outside hitter Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, MA) contributed seven kills and seven digs.

Also for RWU, junior setter Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, CT) added 33 assists. Junior libero Kelsee Loche (Millis, MA) had 17 digs.

The Golden Bears bounced back after a disastrous first set to lead by two points late in the second set, but a pair of service errors downed the stretch proved costly.

Senior right side hitter Inna Sergeychik (West Springfield, MA) led Western New England with six kills and 11 digs.

Freshman outside hitter Kasey Cameron (Reading, MA) also had six kills while junior setter Heather Mears (Amherst, MA) dished out 16 assists.

Freshman libero Kendra Ouimette (Conway, MA) chipped-in with 11 digs.

The Golden Bears, under first-year coach Bret Stothart, finished the season with a 15-14 record that was a five-win improvement from a year ago. Stothart previously coached at Roger Williams before joining the WNE staff.

RWU improves to 27-3 and advances to the conference title match on Saturday (Nov. 5) against second-seeded Endicott (who advanced to the final with a 3-0 win over third-seeded Salve Regina).
