Western New England gains non-conference wins over Framingham State and Newbury

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Western New England women’s volleyball team started slow, but finished strong in posting a pair of non-winning conference wins over Framingham State and host Newbury Saturday afternoon (Oct. 22).

Golden Bears defeated Rams 3-1 dropping the first set 25-21 before bouncing back to finish off the match 25-21, 27-25, and 25-18.

Western New England had three players reach double figures in kills with sophomore outside hitter Maureen Pollet (Dix Hills, NY) leading the way with 13. Freshman outside hitter Kasey Cameron (Reading, MA) added 11 and sophomore middle hitter Tyler Singh (Dumont, NJ) 10.

Three WNE performers also recorded double figures in  digs with freshmen liberos Grace Kucharski (Avon, CT) and Kendra Ouimette (Conway, MA) getting 15 and 14, respectively, and junior outside hitter Jennifer Mears (Amherst, MA) compiling 11.

Freshman setter Val Smith (Norristown, PA) notched a match best 31 assists while junior setter Heather Mears chipped-in with 11.

Framingham State (17-13) received 12 kills from sophomore outside hitter Andressa Fernandes (Framingham, MA) and 17 digs from freshman libero Kayla Bertrand (Agawam, MA).

In the final match, Western New England blanked Newbury 3-0 taking the sets by scores of 25-23, 25-18, and 25-12.

Senior right side Inna Sergeychik (West Springfield, MA) led the Golden Bears attacked with nine kills and six digs. Cameron completed a fine performance with seven kills.

Kucharski compiled 12 digs and Smith dished out 28 assists as Western New England raised its record to 12-13.

Sophomore outside hitter Jessy Touron (Brockton, MA) paced the Nighthawks (13-16) with nine kills.
