Annual Volleyball SpikeTown Tournament a Success

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Western New England University women’s volleyball team hosted its annual SpikeTown 4-v-4 Tournament recently with nearly 75 students from across campus coming together to enjoy an evening of volleyball, friends and fun in the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house.

Teams comprised of four to six players were divided into three pools to begin the tournament with round-robin play. Twelve teams advanced into a single-elimination playoff bracket, culminating in a championship match on center court. In the end, Daniel Minto, Dennis Rinaldi, Nick DeFeo and Ryan Murphy emerged with a 25-20 final set victory to earn the 2013 SpikeTown title.

“SpikeTown is a great tradition that gives all WNE students the opportunity to spend an evening just having fun playing this great sport,” WNE head coach Bret Stothart said. “The students get to meet new people, have laughs, get exercise, relieve stress and compete regardless of skill level, gender or age. It was a great night that brought so many WNE students together around the sport of volleyball.”

Meanwhile, the Golden Bears volleyball team continues its non-traditional spring season, highlighted with competition against NCAA Division II opponents Southern Connecticut State University and American International College on Saturday. The team will also host its annual alumnae match on Saturday, April 27, at the AHLC, beginning at 5 p.m.
