Endicott Thwarts Women's Volleyball in 5-Set Thriller

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Maureen Pollet registered a match-high 19 kills on Saturday, but it wasn't enough as visiting Endicott College spoiled Senior Day festivities for the Western New England University women's volleyball team in a five-set thriller at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house. The Gulls (12-19 overall, 6-2 CCC) turned back the Golden Bears 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference finale for both schools. Western New England (21-6, 6-2) had a chance to earn the No. 1 seed in next week's conference tournament with a win, but will now have to settle for the fourth seed.

Devyn Frank chipped in 10 kills and Heather Mears added 40 assists to help Pollet on offense.

Callie Dolan came off the Gulls bench to nail a team-high 18 kills, followed by Hannah Dahlgren with 11 and Mackenzie Guerre had 10. Jackie Cone made one of her nine kills to give Endicott a 14-13 lead in the decisive set before a WNE attack error went long to give the visitors the upset win.

Endicott's Ashley Norley led all players with 20 digs, while her counterpart Grace Kucharski posted 19.

Both teams struggled offensively as Endicott hit .139 and WNE at .113.

In the opening set, Western New England trailed 4-0 before coming back to earn a 16-12 lead. But that was short-lived as Dahlgren's kill ignited a six-point run for the Gulls en route to the two-point win.

The match was tightly contested as there were 24 ties and 10 lead changes.
