Women's Volleyball Being Featured on "College Weekly" Radio Program Friday

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Western New England University women's volleyball program will be featured on ESPN 1450 AM The Hall on the radio dial in the Springfield area and online on Friday from 4:30 to 5 p.m. Head coach Bret Stothart and senior co-captains Heather and Jennifer Mears will appear on the half-hour segment called "College Weekly" with the station's studio hosts and Springfield Republican contributing sports writer Dick Baker.

Coach Stothart and the Mears twins will discuss the program's record-setting season that culminated with the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England championship for its first postseason title of any kind. Western New England upset top-seed Brandeis on the road in the ECAC Finals.

Stothart won 2012 Commonwealth Coast Conference Coach of the Year accolades after guiding WNE to a second-place finish (6-2 in CCC) after being picked fourth in the preseason coaches’ poll. The Golden Bears went 25-7 overall – first 20-win season since 2009 and second-most wins in school history -- for the winningest season in program history in terms of percentage at .781. His 40-22 (.645) record is tied for the most wins for any volleyball coach after two years at the WNE helm. Western New England went 15-15 last season, so this is a nine-match improvement for the best turnaround in school history.

Heather Mears is part of a school-record five all-CCC selections after leading the conference with 1,055 assists, which is a career high, in her first season as a full-time starter at setter. She finished with 1471 assists over four years.

Jennifer Mears is a defensive specialist who started in 22 of 32 matches while appearing in a career-best 115 sets. She had 236 digs, which set a personal best.
