Women's Volleyball Names Individual Award Winners

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Western New England University women's volleyball coach Bret Stothart announced the team's major award winners during Sunday's Golden Bears Athletics fall sports banquet at Rivers Memorial Hall: Heather Mears, two-time honoree of the Iron Woman; Tyler Singh, Unsung Hero; and Jennifer Mears, Golden Bear Teammate of the Year.

Heather Mears is a senior setter who enjoyed a career year by leading the Commonwealth Coast Conference with 1,055 assists, which ranks second all-time on WNE's single-season list. In her first season as a full-time starter, she earned second-team all-CCC honors. She finished her career with 1471 assists to rank third on the school's all-time chart, as well as 388 digs. The Iron Woman Award goes to the hardest-working player on the team.

The Unsung Hero Award is given to the player who is most deserving of greater recognition for her contributions to the team’s success. A junior middle hitter from Dumont (N.J.) High School, Singh quietly made All-CCC Honorable Mention after tying for first with 103 total blocks and ranking ninth with a .236 attack percentage. She also posted 1.85 kills per set and recorded 37 service aces.

Jennifer Mears joined her sister in having the best season of her four-year career by getting 236 digs in 115 sets. The defensive specialist started in 22 of the team's 32 matches and is projected to be a two-time Academic All-CCC honoree. She ended up with 598 digs for her career. The Golden Bear Teammate of the Year is awarded to the player most exemplifying all the qualities of being a true teammate.

The Mears twins out of Amherst Regional HS also served as the team's co-captains this fall.
