Volleyball Earns No. 4 Seed in 2012 CCC Championship Tournament

CCC Release

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Western New England University will host the University of New England in the first round of the 2012 Commonwealth Coast Conference Volleyball Championship on Tuesday at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free and the public and media are encouraged to attend.

The Golden Bears (21-6 overall) enter the conference postseason as the No. 4 seed after coming in a second-place tie with Endicott and Salve Regina at 6-2 in the CCC. In head-to-head play among those three teams, Endicott posted a 2-0 record, while Salve Regina went 1-1 and Western New England was 0-2.  That earned the second seed for the Gulls.  The Seahawks and Golden Bears were then treated as a new tie, with Salve Regina claiming the third seed based on a 3-1 victory over Western New England on Sept. 26.

The fifth-seeded Nor'easters, meanwhile, ended the regular season at 16-9 and 5-3. Western New England is 7-2 at home while UNE owns a 7-3 mark on the road.

The Golden Bears defeated UNE in four sets, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19, on Sept. 15 in Biddeford, Maine, in the teams' only meeting this season. Maureen Pollet, who had a monster match in WNE's regular-season 3-2 loss to Endicott with 19 kills and three blocks, racked up 21 kills at UNE. Heather Mears tallied 40 assists in that match, helping Kasey Cameron record eight kills. Grace Kucharski had 26 digs, and Tyler Singh was either solely responsible or involved with all seven of her team's blocks.

On the season, Devyn Frank leads the WNE offense with 2.56 kills per set while hitting .285 and Pollet averages 2.74 kills. Mears ranks second in the CCC with 8.91 assists per set, needing only 91 to reach 1,000 for the year. Singh, who averages 1.82 kills and hits .224, is second in the conference with 0.86 blocks per set. Kucharski is among the league leaders with 4.77 digs per set.

For UNE, Maria Kuehl paces the CCC with 9.3 assists per set for an offense that is second in team hitting (.204) and first in kills (11.74).  Paige Curran is the main offensive weapon with 3.38 kills average, .304 attack percentage and 0.76 blocks per set.

WNE leads the all-time series 6-4 and the Golden Bears are making their 13th consecutive appearance in a league tournament. The schools are meeting in the postseason for the fourth time in five seasons.
