Golden Bears Spikers Land Second Seed in ECAC Tournament

CENTERVILLE, Mass.--Western New England University will be the second seed in the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament, which was announced on Monday. The Golden Bears, who are 22-7 overall, will host No. 7 Husson (16-10) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house in ECAC quarterfinal action.

The Golden Bears will be making their second straight ECAC tournament appearance and fourth overall, going 1-3 in three previous trips. Last season, Plymouth State defeated WNE, 3-1, in the first round at home.

Senior middle hitter Devyn Frank paces Western New England with 268 kills on a .283 attack percentage to go along with 74 total blocks, followed by junior outside hitter Maureen Pollet with a team-best 2.66 kills per set. Senior co-captain and setter Heather Mears directs the offense, which also includes primary targets Tyler Singh (198 kills, .232) and Kasey Cameron (152k), with an 8.82 assists average, while also contributing 27 service aces and 224 digs. Mears is 39 assists shy of 1000 for the season. Singh is the team blocks leader with 92, or 0.84 per set.

The Eagles, of the North Atlantic Conference, are 11-8 in road/neutral matches. They are led offensively by senior middle hitter Hannah Olstad who averages 3.17 kills and hits at a .259 clip. Husson has a dangerous serve game evidenced by a 2.82 aces per set average, as Olstad, Aleta Johnson and Kelsey Burill have 66, 63 and 49, respectively.
