Western New England Falls to Hartwick, 3-1, in 2016 Opener

Senior forward Brooke Labrie notches first goal of the season in 85th minute

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 1, 2016) – The Western New England University women's soccer team fell to visiting Hartwick College this afternoon in its 2016 season opener at Suprenant Field.

Top Performers
Senior forward Brooke Labrie (Granby, Mass.) broke up Hartwick's shutout bid with her first goal of the season in the 85th minute. Labrie tied for the team lead last fall with 12 points on five goals and two assists.  

Junior forward Sierra Bentley (Worcester, N.Y.) set up two of Hartwick's three goals, while three different Hawks found the back of the net.

How it Happened
Hartwick opened the scoring just 5:50 into the contest when sophomore defender Madison Miller (Oneonta, N.Y.) headed Bentley's corner kick attempt past Western New England sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.).
• Junior Allie Ricci (Millstone, N.J.) doubled Hartwick's lead in the 12th minute, and sophomore Hanna Konash (Stow, Mass.) made it 3-0 at the 70:32 mark when she was on the receiving end of a cross from Bentley at the left post.
• Labrie got the Golden Bears on the board in the 85th minute with the help of freshman defender Taylor Gilmore (Waterbury, Conn.), who provided an assist for her first collegiate point.

Notes
Veilleux made five saves in net for Western New England.
• The Golden Bears held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks over the final 45 minutes of action.

Western New England (0-1) hits the road on Saturday for the first of two contests at the 12th Annual Husson Classic in Bangor, Maine. The Golden Bears will take on Maine-Presque Isle on Saturday at 4 p.m., before facing Saint Joseph's (Maine) on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. Hartwick (1-0) returns home to host Keuka College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
