Western New England returns to action on Saturday with CCC opener against UNE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 7, 2016) – The Western New England University women's soccer team dropped a 6-0 decision to crosstown rival Springfield College this afternoon in non-conference action at Suprenant Field.

Top Performers
• Freshman Jennifer Merritt (Burlington, Conn.) accounted for one of Western New England's two shots and was a solid contributor in her 41 minutes of action.
• Springfield junior Mary Silva (Ludlow, Mass.) had a hand in two of the Pride's goals, setting up classmate Mikaela Coady (Middletown, Conn.) in the 17th minute before finding the back of the net herself in the 64th minute.

Match Review
• Western New England sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.) made a nice save on Springfield senior midfielder Julia Cormier's (New Bedford, Mass.) scoring chance in the sixth minute, punching the ball over the crossbar, but the Pride took a 1-0 lead on the ensuing corner kick when junior midfielder Dakota Kelly (Bethany, Conn.) headed home Cormier's service.
• Springfield doubled its advantage just under ten minutes later on Coady's goal, before going up 3-0 early in the second half when senior Elizabeth Monsen (Wayne, N.J.) converted her penalty kick attempt.
• The Pride would add three more goals the rest of the way, with freshman Gab Matthews (Canton, Mass.) capping the scoring in the 79th minute.
