Field Hockey Shuts Out Roger Williams 3-0 in 2015 Finale

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 30, 2015) - Senior Katherine Ferrari (Westport Point, Mass.) and sophomore Michelle Carlson (Hackettstown, N.J.) recorded a goal and an assist each as the Western New England University field hockey team won its 2015 season finale, 3-0, over Roger Williams University this evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Golden Bear Stadium.
 
Sophomore Brittany DeLima (Branchville, N.J.) also scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season, and classmate Lauren Palmateer (Coxsackie, N.Y.) added an assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Trupe (Cardiff, Calif.) turned back three shots en route to her fourth shutout of the season, while senior Kaitlyn Labbe (Augusta, Maine) helped preserve the clean sheet with a trio of defensive saves, upping her team-leading total to ten (2^nd in CCC).
 
Western New England sees its season come to a close at 8-10 overall, including 5-7 in conference play. The Golden Bears end the regular season in a tie for fourth place in the league standings with Roger Williams (8-12, 5-7 CCC), but the Hawks hold the tiebreaker and will advance to the CCC Championship as the No. 4 seed. Western New England's total of eight wins this season is the most for the field hockey program since 2010, when the Golden Bears won ten games.
 
Ferrari staked Western New England to a 1-0 advantage with her fifth goal of the season at the 19:34 mark of the first half, when she drove a low shot from the top of the circle past Roger Williams freshman goalkeeper Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) and into the left side of the cage. Carlson was credited with an assist after sending the pass to Ferrari on a penalty corner.
 
Western New England doubled its lead two minutes and nine seconds later, as Carlson redirected a shot by Palmateer past Lunn for her sixth of the season.
 
Both teams had several scoring opportunities in the second half, as they combined for 15 shots over the final 35 minutes, but neither was able to break through until Ferrari found DeLima for the sophomore's ninth goal of the season (T-7^th in CCC) with three minutes remaining.
 
Western New England outshot Roger Williams 11-8 tonight, while the Hawks held an 11-8 advantage in penalty corners. Lunn finished with four saves for the visitors.
