SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 5, 2015) - Western New England University student-athletes Kevin Strobel (Rockland, Mass.) and Grace Trupe (Cardiff, Calif.) have both been recognized with weekly honors from the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) in their respective sports, it was announced earlier today.
Strobel, a junior goalkeeper with the men's soccer program, has been named the Corvias ECAC Division III Defensive Player of the Week in addition to his selection as the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Defensive Player of the Week.
Strobel recorded 18 saves over two matches for Western New England last week, both of which were victories. The junior turned back a season-high 12 shots in a 4-1 win at Curry College in the Golden Bears' regular season finale on Tuesday, before posting a six-save shutout on Saturday in Western New England's 2-0 triumph over Nichols College in the CCC Championship quarterfinals at Suprenant Field.
The Golden Bears (11-8, 8-1 CCC) fell to Gordon College in the CCC semifinals on Tuesday, but still have an opportunity to continue their season with a potential bid to the ECAC New England Championship on the horizon.
Trupe, a sophomore goalkeeper with the field hockey program, adds Corvias ECAC Division III Defensive Player of the Week honors to her resume after being named CCC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. Trupe led Western New England to a 1-1 record in its last two games of the season last week, compiling 15 saves and a 1.00 goals against average. She turned back 12 of the 15 shots that came her way in a 2-1 setback to Endicott College on Wednesday, marking her third straight 10+ save effort and fifth overall this season. Trupe followed that up by posting a three-save shutout on Saturday, as the Golden Bears defeated Roger Williams University 3-0 in their 2015 finale.
Western New England finished its 2015 campaign with an overall record of 8-10 (5-7) CCC, the highest win total for the program since 2010, when the Golden Bears won ten games.
