Golden Bears complete fall season at 5-5 overall

WENHAM, Mass. (October 12, 2016) – The Western New England University women's tennis team was eliminated from the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship with a 5-0 loss to Gordon College in the quarterfinal round this afternoon at Brigham Tennis Courts.

Gordon's No. 2 doubles duo of Abby Caron and Gabby Brucker gave the Fighting Scots a 1-0 lead with their 8-0 victory over Western New England's tandem of junior Kim Phu (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and freshman Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.).

The hosts were also victorious at No. 2 doubles, as Kaelyn Hall and Maddie Berry got past junior Lauren Sell (Milford, Conn.) and freshman Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.), 9-8 with a 7-5 score in the tiebreaker.

Gordon made it a clean sweep in doubles action as Abbie Denney and Justine Hanson posted an 8-2 win over senior captain Joeanna Glantz (Agawam, Mass.) and junior Christina D'Agostino (Bohemia, N.Y.) at No. 1.

At the top of the singles lineup, Denney topped Sell in a first-set tiebreak before registering a 6-1 second set win, while Berry earned a 6-1, 6-1 result over senior captain Corey St. Louis (Groton, Conn.) at No. 5 to seal the match. The four remaining singles matches went unfinished due to conference rules of playing to decision.

Western New England sees its fall season come to a close at 5-5, while Gordon (8-5) advances to the CCC semifinals next Tuesday to take on top-seeded Nichols.
